The Peace Peacock on parade

How do you create a puppet that represents the heritage and many cultures of Andover residents? This was the task we gave locally-based artist Kezia Hoffman and the Andover Cultural Sharing Group. Inspired by the idea of Morris Beasts, who parade with Morris dancers, we liked the idea of creating our own beast that could parade at the World Street Party, and that this “beast” could represent some of the cultures of our residents. Traditionally these “beasts” torment and tease the audience - originally hobbyhorses - they have evolved into other mystical beings such as dragons and unicorns.

After discussions at the Cultural Sharing Group about animals that feature in Andover’s heritage as well as animals from other cultures, the suggestion of a peacock was chosen, with the peacock’s feathers featuring different animals and symbols from different cultures, bringing all those cultures into one.

Over two workshops, 20 local people contributed to creating a giant peacock from willow and tissue, guided by Kezia. The colourful peacock was so large, it had to be carried by six people at the World Street Party, led by Mayfly Morris, and joined by children who had made animal masks. With butterflies, a tiger, hearts, handprints, flowers and symbols, every participant left their mark. Look out for the peacock again at future events!
