Young Trader markets bring creativity to our community

This year, our town has been buzzing with youthful energy thanks to the launch of Young Trader markets. Designed to give young people the chance to sell their handmade products in a real market environment, these events have quickly become a highlight of our community calendar.

Back in June 2025, the pilot market was held as part of the monthly Second Sundays market. Sixteen young people aged 11–25 stepped up to the challenge, each bringing their own unique creations. From handmade jewellery and soaps to cakes, artwork, and even dog biscuits, the stalls were brimming with talent and imagination. Some traders were raising money for school trips or charities, while others were simply excited to earn their own spending money through hard work.

The response from visitors was overwhelming - supportive, enthusiastic, and full of admiration for the creativity on display.

Encouraged by the success of the summer event, a second Young Trader market was organised in the run-up to Christmas inside the Chantry Centre. This time, six new traders joined the line-up alongside five returning faces from June. Once again, the atmosphere was vibrant, festive, and inspiring.

The feedback from young traders and families says it all:

“We’ve always wanted to take part in a market on a High Street, and yesterday we finally had the opportunity. Thank you for supporting us and giving us an unforgettable day.”

“My daughter really enjoyed herself - the organisation beforehand, working out prices, deciding how to dress her pitch, and creating business cards. It really engaged her and grew her confidence.”

We look forward to building on the success of these events in 2026. The goal is simple: to give even more young people the chance to try trading, build confidence, and develop valuable business skills.

The Young Trader markets have proven to be more than just stalls - they’re a celebration of creativity, community spirit, and the entrepreneurial spark of our younger generation.
